In December 2006, Anadarko, through its subsidiary Anadarko Moçambique Area 1 (Anadarko), signed an oil and natural gas Exploration and Production Concession Contract (EPCC) with the Government of the Republic of Mozambique for Area 1 in the Rovuma Basin, northern Mozambique.
Since that time, Anadarko and its partners have safely drilled nine deepwater wells within an area spanning approximately 100 square miles (260 square kilometers) discovering an estimated 17 to 30+ trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of recoverable natural gas (30 to 50+ Tcf of natural gas in place) in an area called the "Prosperidade" complex. Four of the discovery wells (Windjammer, Barquentine, Lagosta and Camarão) were among the largest discoveries in all of Africa during 2010 and 2011, according to IHS Energy. Given this tremendous success, Anadarko and its partners are now advancing a commercial liquefied natural gas (LNG) development that is initially expected to consist of at least two 5-million-tonne-per-annum liquefaction trains.

The Prosperidade complex and future world-class LNG project represents a transformational opportunity for Mozambique to become a major exporter of LNG. This activity has the potential to generate substantial revenues for the government, long-term foreign investment, infrastructure and other social improvements, as well as direct and indirect employment opportunities.
During the third annual Mozambique Mining and Energy Conference held in Maputo, Anadarko Sr. Vice President, Worldwide Exploration Bob Daniels talked about the potential of these major natural gas discoveries. You may view the speech on our YouTube channel.
Sixth- and seventh-grade students at Escola Unidade and Escola Primária 16 de Junho in Palma Village, Mozambique voted to determine the name of Anadarko’s discovery area in Offshore Area 1 of the Rovuma Basin. The name selected, “Prosperidade,” means prosperity – an appropriate name, as this natural gas field represents tremendous opportunities for the people of Mozambique and the partnership.
