In December 2006, Anadarko, through its subsidiary Anadarko Moçambique Area 1 (Anadarko), signed an oil and natural gas Exploration and Production Concession Contract (EPCC) with the Government of the Republic of Mozambique for Area 1 in the Rovuma Basin, northern Mozambique.
Since that time, Anadarko and its partners have safely drilled more than a dozen deepwater wells within the Offshore Area 1 Block discovering an estimated 35 to 65+ Trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of recoverable natural gas (approaching 100 Tcf of original gas in place (OGIP)). Six of the discovery wells in the Prosperidade and Golfinho/Atum complexes (Windjammer, Barquentine, Lagosta, Camarão, Golfinho and Atum) were among the largest discoveries in all of Africa during 2010, 2011 and 2012, according to IHS Energy. Additionally Anadarko and its partners are now advancing a commercial liquefied natural gas (LNG) development that is initially expected to consist of four liquefaction trains (5-million-tonnes-per-annum each).
The Prosperidade complex was followed by the discovery of the Golfinho/Atum complex in 2012, which is located to the north of Prosperidade and is fully contained within the Offshore Area 1. The Golfinho/Atum complex is estimated to hold 15-35 Tcf of recoverable natural gas resources.
These massive natural gas discoveries and future world-class LNG project represents a transformational opportunity for Mozambique to become a major exporter of LNG. This activity has the potential to generate substantial revenues for the government, long-term foreign investment, infrastructure and other social improvements, as well as direct and induced employment opportunities.
In September 2013, Anadarko Chairman, President and CEO Al Walker delivered remarks about the Mozambique LNG project at Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) Conference in Tokyo. You may view the speech on our YouTube channel.
Sixth- and seventh-grade students at Escola Unidade and Escola Primária 16 de Junho in Palma Village, Mozambique voted to determine the name of Anadarko’s discovery area in Offshore Area 1 of the Rovuma Basin. The name selected, “Prosperidade,” means prosperity – an appropriate name, as this natural gas field represents tremendous opportunities for the people of Mozambique and the partnership.
