Applying Technology to Safely Maximize Value
The application of technology in the Wattenberg field is the key to safely unlocking the area’s tremendous resource potential. The combination of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing is extending the productive life of this prolific area, expanding the economic benefits for Colorado, and playing an important role in reducing America's need for imported energy. Anadarko plans to invest more than $2.5 billion in capital over 2013 and 2014 as it expands horizontal drilling activity in the Wattenberg area and continues to explore additional opportunities outside the field's core.
Committed to Operating Safely
Anadarko is committed to operating in a safe manner that protects the environment. In 2011, Anadarko received three awards from the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (COGCC):
- Environmental Protection
- Water-Quality Protection
- Community Relations
Again in 2012, Anadarko was recognized for its environmental and community relations efforts by the COGCC. You may view our YouTube video of the award presentation here. We implement best practices in the Wattenberg program. As required under Colorado law, we publicly share the ingredients used in the hydraulic fracturing process through FracFocus.org. We also partnered with the COGCC and Colorado Oil and Gas Association (COGA) to conduct baseline water samples on new wells outside the greater Wattenberg area before it became a requirement. For more information, watch our YouTube videos about how Anadarko is among the leading contributors to the FracFocus online public registry. Additional improvements include the construction of an oil polishing facility, a new oil pipeline and water-management and recycling strategies that dramatically reduce the number of trucks on the road and their associated emissions. We also employ a dedicated team of trained professionals with infrared (FLIR) cameras that can detect and immediately address fugitive emissions from any of our facilities.
