Anadarko has demonstrated its commitment to evaluating its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and reducing those emissions by voluntarily participating in these climate change initiatives:
Anadarko is a founding reporter to The Climate Registry (TCR), a nonprofit organization that supports a voluntary GHG emissions registry. TCR is emerging as the nation-wide standard for voluntary GHG reporting.
Anadarko is participating in voluntary programs, established by the API, to reduce the intensity of GHG emissions while encouraging technology development within the U.S. oil and natural gas industry. API's Climate Challenge Program consists of three components:
The API Climate Action Challenge focuses on cost-effective measures to reducing GHG intensity. A management plan is being developed by Anadarko that incorporates voluntary actions to reduce, sequester or offset GHG emissions.
The API Climate R&D Challenge involves support for enhanced research and development (R&D) leading to new and improved technologies as a part of a longer-term effort to reduce or sequester GHG emissions. As part of Anadarko's efforts to support sequestration R&D, we have entered into an agreement with the Rocky Mountain Oilfield Testing Center to cooperate on research at our Salt Creek field in Wyoming, to develop acceptable monitoring techniques that combine the use of CO2 injection into geologic hydrocarbon-bearing reservoirs for the purpose of enhanced oil recovery and sequestration.
The API Climate Greenhouse Gas Estimating & Reporting Challenge implements methods for calculating, reporting and tracking emissions across the industry. In 2007, following the acquisitions of Kerr-McGee Corporation and Western Gas Resources, Anadarko reassessed its corporate-wide greenhouse gas emissions baseline.
On September 17, 2003, Anadarko announced its membership and future participation in the U.S. EPA's Natural Gas STAR Program. The Natural Gas STAR Program is a flexible and voluntary partnership between the EPA and the oil and natural gas industry. Its goal is to reduce methane emissions, a GHG, from natural gas operations.
By signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the EPA, Anadarko is agreeing to evaluate technologies that could reduce methane emissions, submit an implementation plan and adopt cost-effective practices. At various company-operated facilities, Anadarko has applied some of these technologies and has been recognized on several occasions with the EPA's Natural Gas STAR Continuing Excellence Award. Under the guidelines of the MOU, we will continue to assess our facilities and inform the EPA about the technologies and activities that will be considered and/or implemented. We will commit to evaluate emission reduction projects for cost effectiveness and then move forward with implementation where it makes sound business sense.
Other benefits of becoming a member of the STAR program include the ability to draw upon the expertise and best practices of industry peers who are also participating.

The Business Roundtable's Climate RESOLVE (Responsible Environmental Steps, Opportunities to Lead by Voluntary Efforts) initiative seeks to have every company in every sector of the economy undertake voluntary actions to control GHG emissions and improve the GHG intensity of the U.S. economy. The BR has made available tools for utilization that promote improving energy efficiency and managing GHG emissions.
